On August 7, 1997, a Douglas DC-8-61F crashed on Fine Air Flight 101 shortly after taking off from Miami Airport . All four crew members and one person on the ground were killed in the accident.

The US Fine Air aircraft was a Douglas DC-8-61 converted into a freighter, which was 29 years old at the time of the accident. The cargo flight was supposed to be done with the DC-8 with the registration number N30UA , but due to a delay a different DC-8 (N27UA) was used. The DC-8 was loaded from 10:30 a.m. This process ended at 12:06 p.m.

At 12:35 p.m., Flight 101 began taking off from runway 27R (now 26L). Shortly before the take-off speed was reached, there was a thud and after the take-off there was another. The nose of the DC-8 was jerked up and stalled . The pilots tried to push the nose of the machine down, but then it was yanked up again and there was another stall. The machine fell nose up on 72nd Avenue and slid into a store. Everyone on board and one person on the ground died.

Cause of accident

The investigations revealed that the DC-8 was loaded incorrectly and therefore the center of gravity was too far back.
