The Finnish Academy of Science (officially Finnish : Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia , Latin : Academia Scientiarum Fennica, English : Finnish Academy of Science and Letters) is a general science society founded in Helsinki in 1908 .

structure

The academy members are elected, their number is limited. The academy is divided into the mathematical and natural science class (Matemaattis-luonnontieteellineen osasto) with seven subject-specific subgroups and the humanities class (Humanistineen osasto) with eight subgroups. In 2011 the Academy had a total of 649 Finnish and 188 foreign members, with the subgroups having a fixed number (331) of currently 194 representatives from the natural sciences and 139 from the humanities. Foreign academics can be selected as corresponding members because of their outstanding achievements. In addition, honorary members can be appointed.

Structure as of 2012: Mathematical and natural science class (Matemaattis-luonnontieteellinen osasto), 194 members: Mathematics and computer science (28), physics and astronomy (26), earth sciences (24), chemistry (21), biology (22), agricultural and Forest Science (22) and Medicine (51). Humanities class (Humanistinen osasto): Theology and Religious Studies (11), Philosophy and Aesthetics (12), Psychology and Pedagogy (14), History and Archeology (17), Finno-Ugric Studies (17), Linguistics (21), Law (18) and social science (29).

The academy was founded as a counterpart to the Swedish-speaking Finska Vetenskaps-Societeten , the Suomen tiedeseura (Societas Scientiarum Fennica), founded in 1838 . It is also to be distinguished from the Finnish Academy (Suomen Akatemia) , which was established in 1947 and is subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Publications

The best-known ongoing publication is the Academy's Annales , which often appear in German or English. The lectures held in monthly meetings are z. Partly published in the Folklore Fellows' Communications and in the meeting reports , which appear as a yearbook from 1977 onwards.
