First Strike is a real-time strategy game released in 2014 for iOS and Android , as well as MacOS , Windows and Linux .

action

The player takes on the role of a nuclear superpower and must try to defeat his opponents by destroying their territory with nuclear attacks.

Gameplay

As a starting point, the player can choose an atomic superpower and how many opponents he wants to play against. The choice of superpower determines the strength of the player at the start of the game. Starting as the USA , the player already has a lot of territory and a good arsenal of weapons, starting the game with North Korea, for example, is much more difficult, as there is only one country and almost no knowledge of weapons beforehand. The actions that the player can take in the game are:

  • Expanding enables new countries to be acquired and the territory to be enlarged.
  • Research enables new technologies to be acquired, such as B. larger missiles with more range or more space in the missile silos.
  • Attack, triggers a missile attack on a selected target.
  • Repel, intercepts a missile in the air as soon as it is close enough to the final target. This is only possible with the small Cruise missiles.

technology

The programming language C and the Unity 3D framework serve as the basis .

development

First Strike was developed from November 2013 by a project team within Feinheit GmbH based on an idea by Moritz Zumbühl and Jeremy Spillmann. After the release on March 12, 2014, the First Strike project team founded the indie game studio Blindflug Studios AG. The game was launched in version 1.0 for Android and iOS tablets. The game was only released for smartphones with the same operating systems in update 1.1 .

At the end of 2014, an early access desktop version was released on Humble Bundle and First Strike HD launched a Steam Greenlight campaign that was successful after three weeks. Today, as before, only the early access version for desktop computers (Mac OS, Windows and Linux) is available. A release date on Steam is not known to this day.

First Strike received consistently good to very good reviews in the trade press. The extraordinary gameplay was praised, which keeps the player in mind what he has done with his nuclear attack on the world, and lets him experience how quickly an escalation would take place in the event of a nuclear war in this world.

“London is shooting an atomic bomb towards Washington. But the missile is intercepted in time, and Washington promptly repels two missiles. London is completely destroyed, the player bites his ankle. Then he hurriedly brings a new missile into position. "

- Linus Schöpfer : Tages-Anzeiger

"The final destruction is staged bombastically."

- Philipp Rüegg : Watson

“With the worn sound design and constant horror reports from destroyed cities and millions of victims, the game tries to create a serious atmosphere. The bottom line is that when a nuclear war begins, there are only losers. To make this clear enough, “First Strike” also refrains from strategic options such as alliances with other countries or peace negotiations. Concepts like "Mutual Assured Destruction" do not exist here - our nuclear arsenal is not only intended to be a deterrent, it will be used sooner or later. "

- Guido Berger : Swiss radio and television

In November, First Strike won the Best of Swiss Apps in the Game category and immediately followed the Indie Prize Award Best Mobile Game at Casual Connect in Amsterdam . In November 2015 First Strike received the Swiss ICT Newcomer Award 2015.
