Fischertor (Schweinfurt)
Fischertor , also Fischerpforte or Maintor , was the name of a former city gate in Schweinfurt . The gate, without the tower above, which was removed in 1853, is the only remaining archway of the total of eight Schweinfurt city gates with inner gates . It serves as a passage under the train tracks from the old town to the Gutermann Promenade on the Main .
location
The five Schweinfurt city gates, which were all demolished in the 19th century , were (from the south on the Main counterclockwise) Brückentor , Mühltor , Obertor , Spitaltor and Fischertor . It stood on the banks of the Main, between the two quarters of Fischerrain and the old commercial district , at the fork in the street between Fischerrain and Rusterberg. The gate was at the point of today's pedestrian underpass to the Main, at the level of the northern railroad track. The fisherman's gate was built on the corner of the slaughterhouse to the northeast.
history
The Fischertor was damaged in the Second Margrave War in 1554 and restored in 1556. In 1853 the gate was demolished in the course of the extension of the Ludwigs-Westbahn from the city station to Würzburg , except for the archway, which still serves as a pedestrian underpass on the railway tracks. The slaughterhouse immediately north of the two railroad tracks was demolished later, not before 1868.
description
The Fischertor had a four-story tower with a clock. It was closed in the evening by the guard living in the tower and opened again in the morning. In contrast to the other Schweinfurt city gates, goods were not allowed to be imported or exported because no customs were levied here. Because the special gate, as its name suggests, was mainly used for the entry and exit of the Schweinfurt fishermen.
