The Fischertor (formerly Fischertörlein ) is a city gate of the former ring wall of Augsburg and is located in the northwest of the old town . Today it connects Frauentorstrasse with Thommstrasse.

history

An entrance gate (“Thorlein”) has been located here since 1328. In 1453 a wooden bridge was added that reached over the moat. Beyond the gate was the fishing suburb on the Senkelbach, in which the socially disadvantaged class of fishermen lived. In 1609 the Fischertor was renewed by the city builder Elias Holl and provided with two additional floors. Despite this expansion, the Fischertor was more of a secondary entrance, as the Wertachbrucker Tor served as the main entrance .

In 1703 the Fischertor was almost completely destroyed in the War of the Spanish Succession , but at the urging of the farmers, reconstruction began six years later. In 1764, through traffic decreased more and more, so that in 1770 the gate was closed.

The way from Frauentorstraße to Fischertor led over the past centuries through a tiny fishing alley. It was not until 1908 that this lane was significantly widened and renamed “Am Fischertor” street. In 1924 the locked city gate was demolished and a new building was erected by the city planning officer Otto Holzer. He provided it with a sweeping entrance and two arches on both sides.
