Fixing describes the final partial process of film development with a fixing agent , in which the remaining silver halides that have not been converted to silver are removed from the photo emulsion of the exposed and developed film or paper image.

There are also now in the fixer among many other conceivable materials usually sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate and ammonium thiosulfate are used. These substances convert silver bromide , which is sparingly soluble in water, into a soluble complex. A large part of this already diffuses out of the layer in the fixer bath, remaining residues are mostly rinsed off with water.
