The flat beetle ( Epuraea aestiva , syn .: Epuraea depressa ) is a beetle from the family of the gloss beetle (Nitidulidae).
features
The beetles become 2.5-3.8 mm long. They have a red-yellow basic color. The last antenna element is enlarged like a hood. This is particularly pronounced in the female. The beetles are difficult to distinguish from other members of the genus.
distribution
The species is common in the Holarctic . It occurs in large parts of the Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe. In Central Europe it is the most common species of the genus Epuraea . In North America, the range extends over much of the United States and Canada and extends in the north to Alaska .
Way of life
The larvae develop in the nests of bumblebees ( bombus ). The beetles are particularly observed in April and May on the flowers of the rose family (Rosaceae), but also on elderberries ( Sambucus ), willows ( Salix ) and common bird cherry ( Prunus padus ). The beetles are often found in the burrows of moles , gray hamsters or those of the ice gray marmot in winter .
