history

When Danzig was part of the dominion of the Teutonic Order , the Danzig Commandantur ran a white flag with a diagonal black stripe from the upper leech to the lower flight section .

The origin of today's flag is the Hanse flag from the 14th century. It already showed the two white crosses on a red background. Until 1457 the flag was only used with the crosses offset to the leech, then a golden crown was added to it. In the period up to the 20th century there were different variants that used either paw crosses or common crosses . The common crosses were finally introduced with the law on the flag right of merchant ships of June 22, 1899.

In 1919 the Free City of Danzig was founded. The appearance of the state flag was regulated by the regulation of the Council of State of February 18, 1920 as amended, § 21 of the Constitution of the Free City of Danzig of November 17, 1920 and the flag regulation of March 18, 1922.

In accordance with Article 2 of the Constitution of the Free City of Danzig of November 17, 1920, last amended by the law of July 4, 1930, the state flag and the trade flag on red cloth in the first third, counting from the flagpole, showed two white commons parallel to this Cross one another and a yellow crown above.

According to the Flag Ordinance of March 18, 1922, the state and commercial flag of the Free City of Danzig was rectangular in shape with a ratio of 2: 3. It shows on a red cloth in the first third, counting from the flagpole, parallel to this two white crosses one above the other and above a yellow crown.

The state flag was to be flown by all departments, authorities and officials on water and on land, unless another flag (official flag , post office flag or pilot flag ) was required to be flown according to the legal provisions . The flag was in use as the national flag until the occupation by Germany in 1939 .

As part of Poland , the city of Danzig again used two paw crosses. The design of the crown was changed there and again in 1996. There are different variants with regard to the appearance of the crosses.
