Flag of Harjedalen

Official flag of the Swedish province of Härjedalen

The official flag of Härjedalen ( Swedish : Härjedalens flagga ) is a coat of arms banner with the coat of arms of the Swedish province of Härjedalen as a motif.

On a silver background, from left to right, there are pliers, a black forging die with a red core and two forging hammers with a red handle. The coat of arms, which was officially introduced in 1884, comes from a seal that was believed to have been in use since 1647.

Unofficial flags

There is also an unofficial version of the Härjedalen flag. It is a Scandinavian cross flag , as found predominantly in the Nordic countries . On a black background there is a yellow cross that is shifted towards the flagpole.

The flag was designed by Härjedalen tourism manager Hans Stergel in the early 1970s. The colors are taken from the Härliga Härjedalen ( English : Wonderful Härjedalen ; German : "Herrliches or wonderful Härjedalen") advertising campaign . The slogan Fria Härjedalen (“Free Härjedalen”) used here and popular with local patriots has been presented in black and yellow since the mid-sixties. The flag was created as a reaction to the cultural and marketing project Republic of Jämtland and is intended to demonstrate Härjedalen's independence from Jämtland County .

An alternative design corresponds to the unofficial flag with the opposite color: a black cross on a yellow background.
