Vexillological symbol : National flag on land and at sea?
Aspect ratio: 2: 3
Officially accepted: November 21, 1990

The flag of Tamil Eelam is red with a narrow white ring in the middle (diameter one third of the width), radially studded with golden cartridges, backed by two crossed black rifles. The head and front paws of a natural-colored tiger, jaws torn open, look out of the ring. (After the successful founding of the state, weapons and ammunition should be dropped.)

history

The flag of Tamil Eelam was designed in 1977. The tiger symbol was adopted by the former Tamil Chola empire, which brought the island of present-day Sri Lanka under its rule in the Middle Ages . The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam originally provided the flag with Tamil lettering ("Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam"), which was removed in 1990 and has since been the national flag of the de facto state of Tamil Eelam. In 2005 changes were published regarding the rules and regulations on how to hoist the flag on various occasions.

meaning

The tiger symbol illustrates the warlike past (Veera varalaru) and the national turmoil of the Tamils. The flag is the symbol of the independent state of Tamil Eelam to be created, which is rooted in the martial traditions (Veera marapuhal) of the Tamils.

Four aspects of the Tamil Eelam ideals and mission represented by the four colors are described in the Tamil Eelam Liberation Tigers rulebook as follows:

Yellow indicates that the Tamils' aspiration to govern themselves independently in their own homeland is a fundamental political human right. The color expresses the rightness of the Tamil struggle and affirms that the Tamil nation will maintain moral superiority in its path to freedom.

Red stands for the insight that the attainment of freedom is not achieved with the establishment of one's own state Tamil Eelam. One should abolish the distinction between castes and classes. Egalitarianism should become the spiritual principle. Gender equality should permeate Tamil society. The principles that are needed for the spread of social justice and the necessary revolutionary changes are represented by the color red.

Black should remind us that the path to freedom is fraught with danger, death and destruction. That it is associated with pain and distress. Black stands for determination and determination, which are necessary for resistance against adversity and the building of the new nation Tamil Eelam as well as for security and the protection of the borders.

White represents Tamil Eelam's purity, honesty and selflessness.
