The Vancouver flag was designed by Robert Watt and approved by the City Council on May 17, 1983 . The green triangle on the left represents the land on which the city of Vancouver was built and the temperate rainforest that surrounds the city. The alternating blue and white waves symbolize the sea, which, besides forestry, is the most important foundation for the prosperity and growth of the city and which resembles the waves of the flag of British Columbia . The city plaque is shown in the golden shield .

The city plaque represents a belt crossed with a lumberjack's ax within a wall crown . The tools represent forestry and shipping, the wall crown symbolizes Vancouver's city ​​status .
