Flag of the Kaliningrad Region

The flag of the Kaliningrad region (also unofficially the Elizabeth flag ) was introduced at the beginning of July 2006 in order to create a new Russian identity for the Kaliningrad region, independent of old Prussian traditions .

The flag shows in horizontal stripes a red upper field, a blue lower field and a middle yellow field which is one third of the width of the other fields. In the red field on the left there is a silver fortress in the suggested Tudor style with two towers and open gates as well as the monogram of Tsarina Elisabeth between the towers. Under her government, Russia annexed the Kingdom of Prussia, which had been conquered during the Seven Years' War , in 1757 and returned it to the Prussian state after her death in 1762 in the Peace of Saint Petersburg .

In this case, the red should symbolize the warlike past of the region. At the same time it reminds of the Red Army , which conquered this area for the Soviet Union . Blue stands for the peaceful times of the area and for the location by the sea. Yellow represents the abundance of amber .

For an explanation of the symbol, see the article on the regional coat of arms .

Together with the coat of arms, the colors of the Russian tricolor result , supplemented by the yellow of amber.
