The flag of the Nordic Council represents the official cooperation of the Nordic countries .

The flag, designed by the Finnish artist Kyösti Varis, was selected from various designs in 1984 and was first used in March 1985 at a meeting of the Nordic Council in Reykjavík .

In the middle on a white background is the abstract representation of a white swan on a circular navy blue field. According to the Pantone Matching System, the color Pantone Reflex Blue C is recommended , although other navy blue shades or black may also be used if necessary. The swan stands for the swan constellation of the same name , which is also known as the cross of the north . The eight feathers represent the members: five states Denmark , Finland , Iceland , Norway , Sweden and three autonomous regions of Åland , Faroe Islands and Greenland .

Before the flag was introduced, the Nordic Council demonstrated the traditional ties of the Nordic countries through the flag of the Kalmar Union , an association of the Scandinavian kingdoms in the 14th to 16th centuries.

In addition to the flag of the Nordic Council, the national flags of the members, mostly Scandinavian cross flags , are used.
