Flarz
A Flarz or Flarzhaus is a type of residential building that has grown historically and consists of several assembled residential units, similar to the modern row house . Flarz houses are particularly widespread in the Zurich Oberland and were originally used as dwelling for smallholders: The typical feature of these houses are the continuous rows of windows, mostly facing south, which enable smallholders to work from home with enough light. This enabled them to supplement their income in the publishing system , which was not enough from the farm alone.
The word Flarz is derived from the verb umeflarze , which stands for "crawl" or "duck" in the local dialect.
