On the area in front of the north transept of St. Mary's Church there were still a few smaller houses until the 19th century. In the middle of the 19th century, the city representatives decided to transform the site into a green area. The buildings were therefore torn down between 1868 and 1871.

After the Second World War, Stralsund was initially part of the Soviet occupation zone . The Soviet Army entered the city on May 1, 1945 with almost no fighting. On July 5, 1945, the Mayor of Stralsund announced: “The military commandant of Stralsund ordered the construction of a heroes' cemetery. He has designated the tree-lined part of the Neuer Markt to the north in front of the church as the space for this. ”At a council meeting on May 6, 1947, the costs were estimated at“ 4000 Reichsmarks only for carrying out the necessary work, without material costs ” August 31, 1945 came to a total of 55,410 Reichsmarks.

The portal was removed when the memorial was redesigned in 1967 based on plans by Hartmut Olejnik . At the same time, an obelisk made of red granite was erected in the middle of the complex, with a bronze relief on it facing the Neuer Markt. It shows a Red Army soldier's handshake with a civilian. The relief was designed by Johannes Friedrich Rogge from Dresden . A state coat of arms of the Soviet Union is attached to the top of the monument . In 1977 the weather- damaged sandstone slabs were replaced by granite slabs.

There is a large granite slab in front of the monument. The inscription is no longer legible.

The monument with its graves is located in the core area of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “ historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar ”. It is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund with the number 607.
