Jörg Riecke

Jörg Riecke (* 30th June 1960 in Bielefeld , † 6. May 2019 ) was a German specialist in German and linguists .

Live and act

After graduating from the Protestant Hans Ehrenberg School in Bielefeld in 1981, Riecke began his community service in the city ​​hospital in Bielefeld-Mitte in the same year . From 1983 to 1989 he studied German, history and Indo-European studies at the universities in Marburg and Regensburg. At the University of Regensburg he received his doctorate in 1992 as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation with a thesis on the semantics and morphology of Old High German verbs, supervised by Klaus Matzel. After teaching and research at the Universities of Regensburg and Eichstätt, then as a DAAD guest lecturer at Masaryk University in Brno , he switched to the University of Gießen , where he completed his habilitation in 2003 with a thesis on the genesis of German medical vocabulary with Hans Ramge and was appointed university lecturer. In 2004/2005 he was a professor for historical linguistics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt . In 2006 he received offers from the universities in Hamburg and Heidelberg, and from 2007 he was the successor of Oskar Reichmann Professor of German Linguistics with special focus on the history of language at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 2010 he founded the European Center for Linguistics in Heidelberg and Mannheim together with Ekkehard Felder and Ludwig Eichinger and was Dean of the Heidelberg Faculty of New Philology from 2015 to 2018. Riecke was a member of the commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Württemberg and a member of the board of trustees of the Henning Kaufmann Foundation for the promotion of German name research on the basis of linguistic history.

He represented the history of the German language from the beginning to the present. His main research interests were etymology and word research, German in Eastern Europe, writing in the Holocaust, as well as name research and the history of linguistics and German studies.
