Ludwig Eichinger

Ludwig Maximilian Eichinger (born May 21, 1950 in Arnstorf ) is a German linguist . Until 2018 he was director of the Institute for German Language (IDS) in Mannheim and professor for German linguistics at the University of Mannheim .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1969 at the Leopoldinum Gymnasium in Passau , Eichinger studied German and Latin studies at the University of Regensburg from 1969 to 1974 and General Linguistics at University College London from 1974 to 1975 . He received his doctorate in 1980 from the University of Bayreuth with the thesis Syntactic Transposition and Semantic Derivation. The adjectives in -isch in today's German . In 1986 he completed his habilitation there with the text space and time in the verb vocabulary of German. A valence grammatical study . In 1990 he became professor for German linguistics at the University of Passau and then professor for “German philology ” at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel .

Eichinger has a seat on the Council for German Spelling . He is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz . In 2010 he was a member of the board of directors for the establishment of the European Center for Linguistics .

In 2014 Eichinger was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon, and in 2018 he also received the Gold Staufer Medal .

Research priorities

In the context of his linguistic research, Eichinger deals in particular with the history of linguistics, the syntax and word formation of German as well as stylistics and text linguistics .
