Flat file content management system
A flat file content management system ( flat file CMS for short ) is a content management system in which the text content is stored exclusively in files , which means that no relational database is required for its operation . Either XML or JSON files are usually used for the persistent storage of the data . By dispensing with a database, flat file CMS are not only suitable for inexpensive web hosting without a database, but also when the web server is not very powerful . In addition, compared to a content management system with a database, the maintenance effort is much lower and the relocation of a website is easier. Themes (design templates) are available for the design, and plugins for functional expansion. Most flat file CMS are open source and therefore free of charge.
One of the oldest flat file CMS is GetSimple CMS , which has been in development since 2009. Newer flat file CMS are Grav by Joomla developer and founder of RocketTheme Andy Miller, and Bludit . Commercial flat file CMS include Pulse CMS and Kirby .
