The flattop (from English flat for flat and top for top) is a brush hairstyle primarily worn by men. The hair on the sides and back of the head is shaved off. The remaining hairs form a surface that rises from back to front. At the top, the hair is then put up if necessary.

The hairstyle became known in youth scenes such as hip-hop and hip-house in the second half of the 1980s through rappers such as Tim Dog , Fast Eddie and Kool Rock Steady, as well as through the comedy duo Kid 'n Play . Christopher “Kid” Reid in particular used a haircut that was occasionally even larger than his own head. In EBM - and Psychobilly -Kreisen of Flattop is often narrow shaves much so that it a mohawk is very similar.

In the United States Armed Forces , the flattop is often used for soldiers. Many celebrities in the USA like Harry Robbins Haldeman or Roger Maris wore this hairstyle. The flat top is also often found in boxing.

The singer and actress Grace Jones also wears a flat top.
