Collation marks are certain printed marks on semi-finished products in book and packaging manufacture .

During book production, collation marks are hidden, printed small bars on each raw sheet , which become visible on the spine of the sheet after the sheet has been folded . Each folded sheet is given a stamp, always starting at the head. They make it easier for the bookbinder to recognize the correct order when collating. If the sheets are correctly arranged, the flutter marks can be seen in a stepped manner. Once the book has been bound, they are no longer visible.

In addition, flutter marks are also used in the packaging industry. To this end, characteristic markings are attached to the edges of printed packaging which are used when the packaging is stacked, e.g. B. collapsed cartons , form one or more continuous lines. Undesired mix-ups with other or differently printed packaging materials are quickly noticed as interruptions in this line. For example, different versions of printed packaging are provided with different collation marks in order to avoid inadvertently packaging with a now obsolete print entering production. In contrast to the flutter marks in books, these flutter marks can often be seen in the form of small bars on the edges of boxes of commercial products.
