The flavins are a group of natural yellow (lat .: flavus ) colorants based on the ring system of isoalloxazine .
Is an important substance of this group that the vitamin B complex belonging riboflavin (also: lactoflavin, Vitamin B 2 ) as the component ( prosthetic group ) of hydrogen-transferring enzymes , known as flavoproteins , in the metabolism of the cell for the respiratory chain , a has great importance.
Flavins are soluble in water.
Paul Karrer received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1937 for his fundamental work on the substance group of flavins.
Important flavins
- Riboflavin (vitamin B 2 )
