history
The island was already an important port on the Skagerrak in the 15th century and was protected by various fortifications from 1555, first the Fort Flekkerhus, built in 1555 on what is now called Gammeløya in Vestergap, which was destroyed in 1561, then from 1635 on the same place built Fort Christiansø and finally, from 1662, Fort Fredriksholm a kilometer further north, which in 1807, which had not been used for a long time, was partially demolished by a British squadron.
During the Second World War , the German Wehrmacht set up a coastal battery in the north of Flekkerøya, the MKB 3./502 Flekkeröy gun emplacement, Lakseviga battery , to protect the approach to Kristiansand.
