Dave Frey

David E. "Dave" Frey (born 1949 in San Francisco , California ; † March 16, 2015 in Santa Rosa , California) was an American jazz musician ( banjo , guitar , ukulele ) who played in the Dixieland scene of San Francisco was active.

Life

Frey grew up in Santa Rosa , attended St. Eugene's Elementary School, Santa Rosa High School, Santa Rosa Junior College and studied at San José State University . His main job was in marketing for 30 years. He had banjo lessons from Leonard Moors; between 1970 and 1974 he played in the Marin Banjo Band , then for a year in the Oakland Banjo Band . In 1975 he founded the Southtown Strummers , with Bill Houston (banjo), Greg Stevens (piano), Phil Anderson (banjo, bass) and Jim Brennan (tuba). In 1983 he became a member of the Jazz Salvation Company . In 1990 he was a founding member of Fourth Street Five , which appeared in local clubs in the 1990s and recorded an album for Bay Records in Berkeley in 1997. From 1991 Frey also played in the 16-piece San Francisco Starlight Orchestra , which played hot jazz in the style of the 1920s, made regular guest appearances at the Strawberry Recreation Center in Tiburon and released several albums. In the 1990s he was also a member of Dress For Less 3 (with Tom Barnebey, Robert Young), Ted Shafer's Jelly Roll Jazz Band ( Stomp Off , 1993), Cell Block 7 (1996-99), Hot Chamber Music Society and the Gold Coast Jazz Band (1997).

With Susanne Sangiacomo he wrote a two-volume banjo textbook, The Ultimate Plectrum Banjo Player's Guide , which appeared in 2000. He also taught at the International Banjo College in Guthrie, Oklahoma . In the field of jazz he was involved in 13 recording sessions between 1992 and 2001. In 2009 he was inducted into the American Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame .
