Göppingen Air Base

The airbase Göppingen was that a small civilian airfield from 1930 in 1933 to a military airfield was. A year later it was decided to station a close reconnaissance squadron at the airfield. Today the Göppingen district Stauferpark is located at the location .

history

The Göppingen Air Base had a leading base with a turf and two fixed launch ramps. From 1935 to 1939 five reconnaissance squadrons with twelve aircraft and 200 soldiers were stationed. These were used in Austria, Spain and Czechoslovakia.

It served mainly as a supply store for front-line units. In 1941 an aviation pilot school with 30 different types of aircraft was founded. The airfield remained intact throughout the war . After the war, former prisoners of war were housed there. The US Army took over the airfield in 1946 and stationed the 41st Infantry Regiment, the Cooke Barracks, on it . In 1992 the US Army gave up the barracks.

From 1940 to 1944 there was a false airfield in Bezgenriet that was supposed to divert enemy planes.

Today the industrial area Stauferpark is located on the site . A medieval market is held there every year.
