Florigen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Florigen is a plant hormone that is triggered by other flowering hormones and initiates the flowering phase .

The existence of such a hormone was postulated in 1936 by Mikhail Christoforowitsch Tschailachjan (Chailakhyan).

properties

Florigen is produced in leaves, depending on the length of the day, and then transported to the tip of the stem axis . In the meantime, the FLOWERING LOCUS T ( FT ) gene has been discovered in Arabidopsis thaliana , which has the suspected properties of Florigen.

Plants register whether it is spring, summer or autumn and when they need to bloom. The most important measured value is the length of the day, which is registered by specialized metabolic cycles in the leaves. If this and the sunshine duration or ambient temperature match the internal specifications, the program for the transition from the vegetative to the generative phase is initiated (a photoperiodism ).
