The Launceston airport , and Launceston Airport is an airport on the northern part of to Australia belonging island Tasmania . The airport is located in the area of the small town of Western Junction and is assigned to the nearby city of Launceston , which is also the namesake of the airport. The airport now plays an important role in Tasmania's air traffic, which is dominated by vacationers, and is the second most important airport on the island after Hobart International Airport .
history
The construction of the airport began in 1931. The opening of the then unpaved airfield under the name Western Junction Airfield took place in 1935. From 1945 the no longer existing use by the Royal Australian Air Force took place , which in the years to come next The increasing number of passengers led to expansion projects and plans, including the expansion of the aprons, taxiways and the paving of the main runway 14R / 32L. In 1988 the airport was transferred to the state Federal Airports Corporation together with several other Australian commercial airports . In 1998 the airport was privatized under the Airport Act 1998 , with the airport being leased to Australia Pacific Airports Pty Ltd for a one-off amount for the next few decades.
