The Urmia Airport ( IATA code OMH , ICAO code OITR ) is the international airport of the Iranian city of Urmia (also Urmieh , Uromiyeh called). It is located about 15 kilometers north of the northwest Iranian city in the province of West Azerbaijan not far from the Turkish and Iraqi borders.

There is no direct flight to it from German-speaking countries, but via Tehran-Mehrabad Airport with Iran Air . Due to the US sanctions against Iran, Iran Air flights destined for Europe make refueling stops in Urmia if these are carried out with the airline's older A300 / A310.

Incidents

  • On January 9, 2011, a Boeing 727-286adv of Iran Air ( aircraft registration EP-IRP) coming from Tehran with 105 people on board was flown into a mountain near Urmia Airport. She was approaching landing in poor weather conditions when the crew took off and shortly afterwards the aircraft collided with a nearby mountain slope. 78 of the 105 people on board were killed (see Iran Air flight 277 ) .
