Iran Air flight 277 ( IR277 for short ) was a domestic scheduled flight of the Iranian airline Iran Air , which on January 9, 2011 at around 7.45 p.m. local time (16:15 UTC ) during poor weather conditions after a go - around  near the airport Urmia in the province of West Azerbaijan in the far northwest of Iran lost altitude and then hit the ground. After that, the machine broke into several parts. The aircraft that was en route from Tehran-Mehrabad Airport to Urmia was a Boeing 727-286 Adv (anced) .

The aircraft used on the flight at the time of the accident was built in 1974. Initial reports, however, gave different information about the crashed machine; according to them, it was said that a Fokker 100 or a Boeing 727 had crashed, but it was finally confirmed that it was the Boeing 727-286Adv with the aircraft registration EP-IRP.

Course of events

The plane was on the flight between Tehran and Urmia and crashed near a lake after taking off near Urmia Airport. The aircraft had stopped the first attempt to land and took off after the crew had reported technical problems and stated that they could not land under these weather conditions and wanted to return to Tehran. At the time of the accident, visibility was poor and it was snowing. After the impact, the plane broke into several pieces, but there was no fire or explosion.

Passengers and crew

78 people were killed and 27 injured on board in the accident. The rescue measures were difficult due to heavy snowfall in the area, according to a representative of the authorities, the snow depth at the crash site was around 70 centimeters. 36 ambulances and eleven health facilities in the area were involved in the rescue measures.
