geography
The airport is located 12 kilometers northeast of the city and has been abandoned since the Red Army withdrew in 1993. It is located about 100 kilometers from the Russian and 25 kilometers from the Belarusian border at an altitude of 400 m .
history
Daugavpils Airfield was built for military purposes and served as the base of a flight regiment of the Air Force of the Soviet Union . At the end of the Soviet Union, 49 MiG-27 and 12 MiG-23 were stationed here.
In 1993 the regiment was withdrawn to Russia and the airfield was privatized.
In 2005, the city of Daugavpils established "Daugavpils lidosta" SIA to resume operations at the airfield. Additional land was acquired and attempts were made, so far without success, to attract investors.
In 2007 the main runway was renewed over a length of one thousand meters.
