Lists of aviation accidents

The air accident of TAROM in Nouadhibou occurred on August 7, 1980. On that day, crashed one on an intercontinental scheduled flights from Bucharest to Nouadhibou located Tupolev Tu-154B-1 of TAROM in the approach. One of the 168 people on board was killed in the accident.

machine

The affected machine was a Tupolev Tu-154B-1 built in 1978, which had the factory number 78A277 and the model serial number 02-77 . The machine was built at Tupolev's Kubischew factory. The roll-out and the first flight took place in May 1978. On June 6, 1978 the Tupolev was registered on the TAROM with the aircraft registration YR-TPH . The three-engine medium range - narrow-body aircraft was equipped with three jet engines of the type Kuznetsov NK-8-2U equipped.

Passengers and crew

There were 152 passengers and a crew of 16 on board the machine. Paul Mitu was the captain of the machine. Among the passengers were many seafarers who were supposed to serve on Romanian ships in the Atlantic, as the Mauritanian state did not operate its own fishing fleet at that time, but issued licenses to foreign fishermen.

the accident

During the nocturnal approach in fog on Nouadhibou, the Tupolev was descending onto the runway under limited visibility, the lights of which the pilots could not see even when the decision height of 90 meters was reached. A missed approach procedure was initiated when the master suddenly felt ground contact at 03:04 at night. He believed the machine had landed on the runway and decided to continue landing. In fact, the Tupolev touched down in the water 350 meters from the runway, slid into a sandbank and broke apart.

Rescue operation

There was no panic on board after the accident. The front half of the fuselage was severely buckled and damaged. One passenger died and 18 other people were injured. Two passengers, a flight attendant and the first officer were seriously injured. Several first class passengers suffered minor injuries. While the bow section had been severely damaged, some passengers in the stern who had been sleeping at the time of the accident did not perceive the crash landing as such and wondered why the passenger stairs were not brought up to the aircraft. Despite the fact that there were a lot of sharks in the sea, they did not approach the airliner, because due to the high position of the air inlet, no water got into the middle engine and it continued to work, deterring the predators with its noise. Half an hour later, the ships of the Mauritanian coast guard arrived. At first it was believed that everyone on board had survived, but later a woman was found in the stern area. The investigation found that the passenger's death was not due to a hard landing, but rather to a heart attack.

root cause

The accident involved a controlled flight into water after the crew had continued their approach to the airport under poor visibility conditions.

According to the investigation, the cause of the accident was a malfunction of the airport's navigation equipment, which the air traffic controller had not warned the pilots about. As a result, the pilots of the airliner deviated slightly southwards from the normal approach path, and the crew did not see the runway lights where they had expected.

Follow and more

The pilots were found not guilty. TAROM received compensation of 36 million US dollars for the loss of the aircraft.

Among the survivors of the incident was the stewardess Aurelia Grigore, who on September 5, 1986 again witnessed an accident involving a TAROM machine with fatalities.
