Airplane and occupants
The aircraft used on the flight was a 43-year-old Soviet -made Antonov An-12 that made its maiden flight in 1962. The machine had the factory number 2400901. The four-engine transport aircraft was equipped with four Iwchenko AI-20M turboprop engines .
Around 100 soldiers from the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and four crew members were on board the machine .
the accident
The flight was operated by Wimbi Dira Airways. It was a charter flight on which around 100 soldiers were to be flown from Kisangani to Bunia with a stopover in Aru . The flight was initially without any special incidents. When landing on an earthy runway in Aru, the right main landing gear was bent backwards and the left one was pushed through the cabin floor into the aircraft interior.
The machine then came to a stop. During the uncoordinated evacuation, two passengers were killed after running into the machine's second propeller. On the left side of the images of the machine, traces of blood can be seen on the fuselage at the propeller height.
In addition to the two fatal incidents, five people were injured in the course of the events.
