plane

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A8, which was 4 years and 6 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton, Washington , and made its maiden flight on October 16, 1974, before being delivered to Indian Airlines that same month. The aircraft had the factory number 20962, it was the 380th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration VT-ECR . The twin- engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A engines.

the accident

The flight took off from Trivandrum International Airport and initially went without incident. During the flight, the machine was cleared to descend to 27,000 feet (approx. 8,230 meters). Shortly thereafter, there was an explosion in the front on-board toilet, which resulted in a complete failure of the electrical system and the instruments.

Because of the system failure, the spoilers could not be extended when approaching Madras Airport . The machine came up about 760 meters behind the threshold of runway 25 and rolled over the end of it. The right side of the machine caught fire. All 67 inmates survived the incident.

Cause of accident

The investigators noted that the cause of the accident was an explosion in the front on-board toilet. The machine rolled over the end of the runway because of a high landing speed and the fact that spoilers , thrust reversers and anti-lock braking systems were not available as a result of the explosion.
