In the plane crash in Bremerhaven on December 26, 2001, a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander of the Bremerhaven Airline crashed into the Weser shortly after take-off . She was on the flight from Bremerhaven Airport to the German North Sea island of Wangerooge .

course

The Britten-Norman began taking off from runway 34 at 10:12 am. The aircraft took off but hardly gained any altitude. The aircraft made a left turn over the Weser , lost altitude and crashed into the river with the left wing first. Seven passengers and the pilot died, one passenger survived seriously injured.

Cause of accident

In the final investigation report from February 2004, the cause of the accident was found to be inadequate de-icing of the wings, which meant that the snow deposited there had not been removed.

It had snowed shortly before take-off and the wings of the Britten-Norman were covered with snow. The pilot removed the snow with his bare hand only from the cockpit window and the wing leading edges. The snow did not come off even during the initial climb, which led to a disruption of the airflow around the wing and reduced lift so much that the aircraft could no longer be kept in the air when the pilot retracted the flaps.
