US Navy aircraft carriers and squadrons in the Second Gulf War

A total of six aircraft carriers of the US Navy with one squadron (CVW - carrier air wing ) took part in the Second Gulf War in part.

The aircraft carriers and their squadrons are listed in the chronological order in which they were deployed. The table contains the individual squadrons of the squadrons with the type of aircraft used.

The abbreviations in the unit Names of aircraft squadrons mean: VF = fighter squadron , VFA = fighter-bomber squadron , VA = bomber squadron , VAW = early warning aircraft squadron , VAQ = Relay for electronic warfare and Wild Weasel -Inserts, HS = helicopter squadron , VS = maritime patrol and antisubmarine Hunting, VRC = transport plane.

USS Saratoga / CVW-17

From the USS Saratoga (CV-60) , CVW-17 flew missions against Iraq from August 7, 1990 to March 28, 1991. The carrier operated in the Red Sea.

USS John F. Kennedy / CVW-3

The CVW-3 squadron served from August 15, 1990 to March 28, 1991 from USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) against Iraq.

USS Midway / CVW-5

From October 2, 1990 to April 17, 1991, USS Midway (CV-41) operated in the Persian Gulf , on board the aircraft of the CVW-5 . On January 17, 1991, from the Operation Desert Shield to Desert Storm , as aircraft of CVW-5 deep flew a night attack in Iraq. This squadron alone flew 3,383 missions in 43 days without losses of its own.

USS Ranger / CVW-2

USS Ranger (CV-61) with CVW-2 on board began its participation in Operation Desert Shield on December 8, 1990 from the Indian Ocean. On January 15, 1991, Ranger moved to the Arabian Gulf to begin flying attacks against Iraqi forces as part of Operation Desert Storm on January 17. After more than 170 missions, the mission was ended on June 8, 1991.

USS America / CVW-1

USS America (CV-66) with its squadron CVW-1 began its use on December 28, 1990. The carrier combat group around USS America operated in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. After participating in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, their mission was officially ended on April 18, 1991.

USS Theodor Roosevelt / CVW-8

On December 28, 1990, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) began its service in the Gulf as the last of the six aircraft carriers used in the Gulf War. Roosevelt's mission with CVW-8 ended on June 28, 1991.
