Foley County was a county in the US state of Texas that existed from 1887 to 1897. The area is now part of Brewster County .

history

By law of March 15, 1887, three new counties were separated from Presidio County : Buchel Counties , Foley Counties and Jeff Davis Counties . Shortly before, Brewster County had already been re-established from areas of Presidio County. The former Brewster County comprised the western part of today's Brewster County, Buchel County the northeastern part, Foley County the southeastern part. It failed in the following years to organize the sparsely populated Foley County as a county, and on March 22, 1889 Brewster County was given the task of temporarily taking over the administrative tasks in Foley County. Foley County had 25 residents according to the 1890 census.

Since it was not possible to establish a county administration in the next few years, the Texas Senate passed a law according to which the area of Foley County (as well as that of Buchel County) should become part of Brewster County. This law was presented to the Texas Governor Charles Allen Culberson for signature on April 9, 1897 . He should have signed the bill or sent it back to the Senate within a constitutionally mandated period, but did not. Therefore, the law went into effect without his signature. With the dissolution of the Buchel and Foley Counties and their annexation to Brewster County, this became the largest county in the state of Texas in terms of area.
