The Follansbee House is a historic building in Andover in the state of Massachusetts . The house, which was built in 1835, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as part of the Multiple Property Submission Town of Andover MRA .
history
Paul Bailey Follansbee (1811-1900) came to Andover from West Newbury in the 1830s and acquired farmland on either side of Lowell Street. He first built a house, and in the next few years a barn and a greenhouse were added. Follansbee sold a house of the previous owner that was already on the property, and he also resold some parts of the land. Follansbee worked as a landscaper and florist, ran a tree nursery on his land and was also a hobby archaeologist. On his property he discovered numerous historical finds such as arrow and spearheads. On the 250th anniversary of the city in 1896, he presented his finds to the public in an exhibition on his farm. Follansbee's house and grounds have been touted as one of Andover's landmarks in contemporary newspapers in the region.
Paul Follansbee was married to Eliza Ann Chase (1811-1886) and the couple had nine children together. After Paul's death in 1900, his son John inherited the property, but he died eight months later, and the house and land were passed on to two of John's sisters. In 1904, Paul's grandson Charles Spaulding took over the family business. Until 1919 the property remained in the possession of the descendants of Follansbees, after which the owners changed several times.
