history

Originally Luigi Fontana (not to be confused with the painter Lucio Fontana ) founded a company under his name in 1881 for the production of glass plates. In 1931, he collaborated with the Italian designer Gio Ponti , who was the artistic director of the new FontanaArte department. Gio Ponti worked closely with the glass master Pietro Chiesa. FontanaArte became an independent company as early as 1933, concentrating on the manual production of furnishings (mostly made of glass). Classics of Italian design such as the Fontana glass table (1932 by Pietro Chiesa) or the Billia lamp (1931 by Gio Ponti) were created.

From 1954 the Frenchman Max Ingrand became the artistic director of Fontana Arte. He expanded industrial production and in the following years created some notable designs in the famous FontanaArte glass with its mostly slightly green color. In 1979 Gae Aulenti became Art Director and sets new impulses with the glass table Tavolo con Ruote , in 1980 her Table with Wheels was created . In 2004 David Chipperfield designed the Chandelier hanging lamp and the Corrubedo wall lamp for Fontana Arte .

Objects from Fontana Arte can be found in numerous design museums such as the Museum of Applied Art in Cologne , the Brooklyn Museum , New York, or the Museum of Modern Art in New York . In design auctions and platforms, these glass works achieve fan prices.
