Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs are an Australian football team from Melbourne , which currently plays in the AFL , the top division. Its official name is Footscray Football Club . The club plays at the Etihad Stadium , which holds 56,000 spectators. The club colors are blue, red and white.
history
The club was founded in 1873 as the Footscray Football Club. Two years later they moved into the club's longstanding stadium, the Whitten Oval . Overall, the club was able to win the championship of the Victorian Football Association , the predecessor organization of the AFL, nine times. The first championship was won in 1898. This success could be repeated in the following two years. The next championships followed in 1908 and 1913. Between 1915 and 1917 the game was stopped due to the First World War.
After the war, four championships between 1919 and 1924 were able to build on the successes. After that, the team remained unsuccessful for a long time and only reached the finals a few times, but none of them could be won for a long time. It was not until 1954 that the Bulldogs were able to defeat the Melbourne Demons in the final of the championship, now renamed the Victorian Football League (VFL), with a score of 102: 51 and thus celebrated the last great success in club history for a long time. The club gave itself its current name Western Bulldogs Football Club in 1997. In 2016, the Bulldogs moved into the finals as seventh in the regular season for the first time since 1961, where they sensationally defeated the Sydney Swans with 89:67. The team won its first championship since 1954 and the first title under the banner of the Australian Football League .
