The West Coast Eagles are an Australian football team based in Perth , Western Australia and playing in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club colors are blue, white and yellow. The club, founded in 1986, plays its home games at the Optus Stadium.

history

The Eagles were founded in 1986 and joined the game of the Victorian Football League a year later . This was an expression of the desire of the VFL to expand in states other than Victoria . The team showed few teething problems and was able to establish itself quickly in the top division of Australian football. In 1991 they won the McClelland Trophy as the best team of the regular season , just a year later the first AFL championship title followed with a 113-85 success in the Grand Final against the Geelong Cats . In 1994 this success was repeated again against Geelong. 1995 saw the inclusion of Fremantle Dockers in the AFL for the first time regional competition in Western Australia . After a brief period of weakness around the turn of the millennium, the Eagles moved into the Grand Final again in 2005 , but had to admit defeat there for the first time against the Sydney Swans . A year later the revenge was achieved in a new edition with a nearly 85:84 and thus the third championship title. Since then, the Eagles have long been considered mediocre at the AFL. In 2015 they reached the Grand Final again after a long dry spell , but were defeated by series champion Hawthorn Hawks with 61: 107. In 2018 the Eagles surprisingly moved into the final again and won the fourth title in a memorable game against Collingwood (79:74).

Fans

With almost 80,000 members, West Coast is one of the most heavily supported teams in the AFL. Due to the limited capacity of the stadium, there is even a waiting list for new admissions. Intense rivalries exist with the Geelong Cats , the Sydney Swans and the local rivals from the Fremantle Dockers .
