The Hawthorn Football Club is an Australian football team from Hawthorn , Victoria , in the Australian Football League plays. The team known under the name "The Hawks" ( German  Die Falken ) wears brown and gold striped jerseys. Hawthorn has been one of the most successful club teams in Australian football since the 1970s.

history

Hawthorn Football Club was founded in 1902 and joined the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1925 . After no significant successes could be achieved for decades and the Hawks regularly landed at the bottom of the table, the first title win succeeded under the direction of coach John Kennedy in 1961. The permanent establishment as the top team of the VFL did not take place until the 1970s. In that decade, Hawthorn reached four Grand Finals , three of which (1971, 1976, 1978) could be won. In the 1980s, the Hawks rose to the absolute top team in Australian football under coach Allan Jeans. Between 1983 and 1989 Hawthorn was seven times in a row in the Grand Final , four times (1983, 1986, 1988, 1989) they kept the upper hand. The rivalry with the Essendon Bombers , which was the strongest athletic competitor at the time and who defeated the Hawks in two Grand Finals , resulted from this time . This "golden era" ended at the beginning of the 1990s and Hawthorn temporarily slipped back into mediocrity. In recent years, however, the Hawks have found their way back to their old strength under coach Alastair Clarkson. In 2008, the Geelong Cats won their first title in seventeen years. Between 2012 and 2015 Hawthorn was in the Grand Final every year and won it for the first time in the club's history three championships in a row (2013-2015).

Fans

Hawthorn has almost 70,000 club members and an average attendance of well over 40,000. This makes the Hawks one of the most popular teams in the AFL. Most of the fans come from the greater Melbourne area , but the Hawks are also extremely popular in other parts of Australia, particularly Tasmania . In addition to their regular home games at Melbourne Cricket Ground , the Hawks have also played a few games every season at York Park in Launceston on Tasmania since 2001 .
