The York Park (through sponsorship agreement officially University of Tasmania stage , in short, UTAS Stadium ) is a stadium in the suburb of Invermay the Australian city of Launceston on the island of Tasmania . On the system are u. a. Games played in Australian football , cricket , rugby and soccer . Today the facility offers 19,500 places for visitors. The entire playing field made of natural grass measures 170 m × 140 m.
history
The location of today's stadium used to be swampy terrain. It was used as a landfill . In 1874 the Launceston Showground was built there . In the following decades the showground was also used for sports such as cricket, bowls and tennis . At the end of the 1910s there were plans to build a stadium for various sports. Work on York Park began in 1919. It was inaugurated two years later. The North Launceston Football Club (Australian Football) has played its games in York Park since 1923. The building has been renovated and expanded several times in its history. In 2000 it was adapted to the regulations of the Australian Football League (AFL). The Hawthorn Hawks from the AFL, based in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn , have a large fan base in the country, particularly in Tasmania. That is why the club has played several games of the season in York Park every year since 2001. The St Kilda Saints followed from 2003 to 2006 . At that time, York Park had 15,000 seats. From 2002 to September 2003 the site was renovated, expanded and completed in time for the 2003 Rugby Union World Cup . In the preliminary group A of the World Cup, Namibia and Romania met on October 30th (7:37). In 2004, the municipal utility company Aurora Energy became the name sponsor of York Park and was named Aurora Stadium . After 12 years, the University of Tasmania (UTAS) took over the sponsorship rights in 2016 with a five-year contract.
On June 18, 2006, the Hawthorn Hawks game against the Richmond Tigers came to 20,971 spectators in the stadium and set a record attendance. The stadium is owned and operated by the City of Launceston. It has several rooms, which u. a. Can be rented for meetings , dinners , cocktail parties , seminars or product launches.
At the end of June 2020, the joint application from Australia and New Zealand was awarded the contract for the 2023 Women's World Cup . York Park is on the list of possible venues for the World Cup.
