The Elephant Reef is a roughly 4.5 km long reef in the archipelago of the Heard and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . It lies within the eastern foothills of Heard Island and was created as a result of the erosion of the Elephant Spit .

It is named after the name of the Elephant Spit. This in turn is named after the elephant seals , which visit this spit in large numbers as a resting place.
