The Elephant Spit is a 7 km-long spit of sand and gravel, the eastern end of the island Heard in the southern Indian Ocean forms. Few areas are higher than two  meters , while others are washed over by the sea. It ends in Spit Point . As a result of increasing erosion, the property is now segmented into Alert Island with Spit Point, Elephant Reef and Alfred Point .

It is named after the elephant seals , which visit the spit in large numbers as a resting place.
