The Spit Bay is an open bay of the island Heard in the southern Indian Ocean . It lies between the northeast coastline and the Elephant Spit with Spit Point , the eastern branch of the island.
Its name is derived from a prominent headland ( English spit ) that forms the south and east banks of the bay. The appointment was made presumably by American sealers who here in 1855 the seal hunt pursued. The name can then also be found on British nautical charts .
