The base of Elephant Spit in the east of Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean is called Alfred Point . The headland of sand and gravel, triangular when viewed from above, was created by erosion and borders the Scholes Lagoon to the west .
It is named after the American schooner Alfred , who was whaling in the waters around Heard Island when it sank in a storm off the Elephant Spit on December 29, 1854 and is now one of the 14 known wrecks off Heard.
