Alert Island is a narrow, sandy island in the Heard and McDonald Islands archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean . It was created in the course of the increasing erosion of the Elephant Spit in the east of Heard .
It is named after the American Bark Alert from New London , Connecticut , who hunted seals in the waters around Heard between 1855 and 1856 .
