Quincy Jones and Bob Russell wrote the song for the blaxploitation film Liebling ( For Love of Ivy (1968), directed by Daniel Mann ), in which Sidney Poitier , Abbey Lincoln and Beau Bridges starred . It was one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to depict a romantic relationship between an African American couple. The song, featured in the film by Shirley Horn , received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1969 .
The soundtrack album was released in 1968 by ABC-Paramount (ABCS-OC-7). For Love of Ivy was recorded by numerous musicians and bands in the late 1960s, including a. by Rita Moss , Phil Bodners Brass Ring , Woody Herman and His Orchestra , the orchestra of Hugo Montenegro and The Tymes .
