forfone was a free VoIP application that enabled users to make calls, send text messages , send photos and share their location. The app did not require registration or a user account, but enabled direct telephony to all mobile and landline networks worldwide via wireless LAN , LTE (4G) or UMTS (3G).

The user was guaranteed 100% availability by sending a push message . The forfone app did not have to be open or run in the background so that calls could be accepted or SMS received. The application ran under Android version 2.2 or higher, Apple iOS version 4.3 or higher and Windows Phone version 7.5 or higher.

Currently (as of March 2015) the app is not available on Google Play or itunes. When you access the website, there is a link to the homepage of toolani GmbH (www.toolani.com). As an alternative, toolani support recommends using the "toolani-VoIP" app. The forfone app ceased operations at the beginning of 2015.

In 2012, the independent Viennese research institute SBA-Research discovered massive security gaps in current messenger apps in a comparative test. This enabled the researchers not only to take over the user account, but also to send free SMS from the server of some apps.

Only with forfone and three other apps was it not possible to take over the user account, and messages from these users could not be sent or received.
