A format template in information technology has the task of simplifying the input of data and should lead to a uniform, clear and structured representation of the data.

In word processing or DTP programs, a format template (also known as a style template) is a combination of any format features that can be assigned a common name, saved and, if necessary, assigned to a text part in one step. In older programs, print format templates are also used. Word processing and DTP programs could theoretically be programmed in such a way that the user would be able to create templates for all conceivable format features. In practice, however, this is not the case: Character styles and paragraph styles are common. In addition, section, table or list format templates are also conceivable. Format templates are normally stored in a so-called document template , i.e. a sample file that is assigned to the respective work file.
