A text module is a text fragment that is used repeatedly. The term is used with different meanings in both word processing and linguistics .

In word processing, a text module is a ready- made text that is inserted into another text. It can be called up within an Office package using a short name. Another word for text module is AutoText entry . There are also special programs that manage text modules and make them available system-wide. Text modules save the repeated input of similar sentences, for example in the form of automated answers in customer service .

In linguistics, text modules are linguistic units that are often used in the same or a similar form to connect sentences or paragraphs with one another. They are easy to remember and can be used regardless of the context. Examples are formulations such as “Kind regards” or “This is noticeable”.

In contrastive linguistics , a comparison of text modules from two languages enables simple observations of the relationship between the languages. Because of their schematic form, text modules are again suitable as a basis for AutoText entries in computer-aided translation.

Boilerplate refers to a constant block of text, mostly at the end of a text, mostly in connection with programming or media releases.

Another form of text module has established itself with social media : the virtual text module . These are prefabricated landing pages (landing pages), on which there is information that can be sent in case of need by e-mail. They can be used for information purposes as well as for promotional purposes in order to provide the addressee with the desired information without having to rewrite it over and over again. In addition to text information, the ready-made information can also contain information videos, links to other pages and contact forms.
